Hotel 1898, located in the very heart of Barcelona, is the former head offices of Compañía General de Tabacos de Filipinas. The architect Oriol Mestres designed it in 1880 as the home of the López y López family, Marquises of Comillas, but it was not until 1929 that was converted into the head offices of the tobacco trading company and given a major overhaul by Josep Maria Sagnier and Josep Maria Rivas. Because of its architectural history and the personalities of the people who lived there, this building has been a cultural reference since the end of the nineteenth century.
