Barcelona is a supremely athletic city. For more than one hundred years, Barcelona has been at the forefront of sports in Spain and Europe, thanks to the participation of its citizens in marathons, the long-lived Formula 1 Circuit on Montjuïc, which awarded grand prizes until 1975, and the athletic clubs competing on all levels, from school teams to first division teams like FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol.
Barcelona also hosted the 1992 Olympic Games, which were widely considered the best in history and also showed our city to the world. In addition, the city gives all its residents and visitors unbeatable access to sports facilities, including public pools and gyms as well as parks and beaches equipped with basketball courts, ping-pong tables, bocce, running tracks and even hiking trails.
So it shouldn’t surprise you that Barcelona holds the Guinness World Record of participants in a public race (109,457 people) or that of all European cities it has the highest rates of gym membership.
